The World Phygital Community (WPC) continues to strengthen its global presence through participation in key international events, where dialogue, collaboration, and shared vision contribute to the development of phygital sport.
As part of this ongoing effort, WPC Chairperson and Managing Director Dan Merkley returned to the Montenegro Future Festival in Bar, one of the region’s leading gatherings across esports, gaming, and technology which took place from 24-26 April.
Through his participation, he engaged with industry leaders, WPC members, and stakeholders, reinforcing the role of phygital sport within the broader global ecosystem.
In this interview, Dan Merkley shares his impressions from this year’s festival, the importance of in-person engagement in a digital-first world, and his message to the global WPC network as the phygital movement continues to grow.
How would you describe this year’s Montenegro Future Festival, and what stood out to you the most?
“This is my second time here, and in just one year, it’s clear that the festival has grown. The programming is richer, and the number of people attending has increased”.
How important is it for communities to come together and meet at events like this?
“We are all here talking about digital connection, esports, and technologies that allow people to engage without being physically present.
But being here, representing phygital, is a powerful reminder of the importance of real world interaction. There is nothing that replaces that person-to-person connection.
Phygital brings these two worlds together. It combines the digital experience people love with physical sport, encouraging participation, presence, and the creation of a true spectacle.”
How was your experience participating in the panel discussion, “Phygital Sports: Where Reality Meets the Game”?
“The composition of the panel was outstanding. It was a privilege to be part of such a diverse and experienced group.
We had a product visionary, a phygital discipline innovator, and a tournament operator who is actively contributing to the global expansion of phygital sport.
It was extremely satisfying to hear others speak so positively about phygital and to feel that level of support. It reinforces that we are moving in the right direction.”
What message would you like to share with WPC members around the world?
“To all World Phygital Community members, I want you to know that I stand with you.
The story of this movement begins in your local markets. It is not only about major global events like the Games of the Future, but about consistent, year-round effort.
Athlete development, legacy, and long-term engagement are built through the strength and commitment of our members. That is where the future of phygital truly lies.”
What are your impressions of the city of Bar as a host destination?
“Bar is a beautiful location, right on the seaside. It is a popular destination in the region, and the hospitality here has been excellent.”
The Montenegro Future Festival continues to serve as an important platform for bringing together communities, ideas, and innovation across the esports and phygital landscape. For the World Phygital Community, participation in events like this reinforces the importance of collaboration, in-person engagement, and the ongoing work of members in building a sustainable and globally connected ecosystem.
