While the competition continues to rage at Phygital Contenders: Abu Dhabi – Football tournament, it has also provided opportunities for WPC members to meet and hear about each other’s experiences being part of the phygital ecosystem
One of those members is Nicolás Crespo, Head of the Phygital Department at the Asociación de Deportes Electrónicos y Videojuegos de Argentina, Nicolás traveled to Abu Dhabi with the La Crema squad, supporting their campaign with logistical coordination, translation, and on-the-ground management. While La Crema is the team participating at the Phygital Contenders, the Asociación is guiding their journey both strategically and operationally.
He has also helped ensure the club can make the most of their experience both on and off the pitch through exposure, visibility and connections with the wider phygital community.
“La Crema has been outstanding in their focus and commitment. For us at the Asociación, it is not just about competition, but is also about helping La Crema grow, learn and prepare for what comes next.” said Nicolás.
In addition to competing on the pitch, some of the La Crema athletes are also content creators, supported by a dedicated content creator manager and strategist. Their presence reflects a wider belief that storytelling and visibility are essential to building the sport from the ground up, especially in regions where phygital competition is still emerging.
“Bringing creators was key. They helped connect the competition to new audiences who might not yet understand what phygital sport is. It builds excitement and opens conversations about what is next in the world of sports.” Nicolás added.
Most clubs in Argentina are currently created specifically around key tournaments rather than operating year-round. While this presents a short-term challenge, Nicolás sees it as a long-term opportunity. By leveraging visibility and consistency, the Asociación hopes to help clubs transition into stable, full-cycle organizations.
“The best thing we can do as members of the phygital movement is to keep developing the sport within our countries. I truly believe that involving content creators and people who can help raise awareness will gradually open more opportunities for support, which will lead to better-prepared clubs, improved streaming, and a higher overall standard.”, said Nicolás.
What has stood out most about La Crema’s presence at Phygital Contenders so far is the internal chemistry among players. Despite limited time training together, the team has shown a clear sense of unity, communication, and trust.
“The athletes have great spirit. They are fun, positive, and supportive of each other, even though they do not usually play together throughout the year. There is trust, confidence, and a shared understanding of what it takes to compete at this level.”, said Nicolás.
As the tournament progresses, the Asociación de Deportes Electrónicos y Videojuegos de Argentina continues to support La Crema’s campaign while looking ahead to what this coming season will bring. Their work highlights the critical role WPC members play in shaping not just results, but the entire ecosystem behind a club’s success.
