Africa’s Phygital Sports Revolution is Here!

Africa is leading the phygital charge, with this new groundbreaking sporting phenomenon taking the continent by storm.
At the forefront of Africa’s phygital revolution is Phygital South Africa, who recently hosted a high-energy Phygital Football demonstration tournament in Johannesburg. Media, phygital athletes, fans and supporters alike gathered to witness the electrifying fusion of phygital first-hand, many for the first time. Local clubs gathered to battle it out on the console before taking their skills to the pitch, in a high-energy friendly, demonstration tournament, aimed at showcasing the power and prowess of phygital to its rapt audience.
Edgar Sandamela, Phygital South Africa, believes this is a game-changer:
“South Africa has always been at the forefront of sports innovation. Phygital sport is opening doors for new audiences, promoting digital literacy, and inspiring young athletes. With the right support, we can embed phygital into the very fabric of African sports.”
This is just the beginning – With WPC members across 23 African nations, the phygital movement is rapidly gaining momentum. In the past year alone, 240 clubs have competed for a spot at the GOTF Qualifiers or The Games of the Future 2025, in the UAE.
Dan Merkley, Chairperson and Managing Director of WPC, shares his vision:
“The fusion of gaming and traditional sports unlocks a world of opportunities. By working together, WPC members across Africa can fuel talent, drive economic growth, and create life-changing pathways for athletes and gamers alike. This isn’t just about sports—it’s about shaping a movement.”
Africa has the talent, passion, and drive to not just participate in the phygital revolution – but to lead it. Whether you’re an athlete, gamer, or sports fan, now is the time to get involved!
