Venues, Recruitment & Exposure: Insights from GOTF Majors

Organizing a GOTF Major requires meticulous planning, strategic partnerships, and a deep understanding of both esports and live event logistics. The experience for the Slovenian Esports Federation, who hosted a GOTF Major for Phygital Football, and Phygital Games Colombia, who staged GOTF Majors for Phygital Football, Phygital Dancing, and Phygital Basketball, highlighted some of the key challenges and considerations.

The Right Venue Turns Competition into a Spectacle

Choosing the right venue is key to a successful GOTF Major, balancing space, connectivity, and audience engagement. It must support both physical and digital competitions with high-speed internet and immersive setups. The Slovenian Esports Federation found its venue ideal for delivering a world-class event, while Phygital Games Colombia secured a high-tech experience through one of their partners. “We held our Phygital Dancing Cup at the city’s leading gaming center, meeting key requirements.” said Diego Ramos, Director at Phygital Games Colombia.

Gaming and Sports Unite, Creating a New Breed of Athletes

With the rapid growth of phygital sports, a new wave of athletes is emerging—those who master both physical endurance and virtual precision. Programs like the Phygital School Games are already being implemented to introduce these hybrid disciplines to students. “We currently have a program called Phygital School Games, which aims to bring phygital disciplines to schools in the country so that they can begin to learn about and train in them.” shared Diego Ramos, Director at Phygital Games Colombia.

Social Media Drives the Hunt for Top Talent

A successful tournament requires top-tier competitors, and recruitment strategies can vary. Some of the most effective methods include direct invitations through partnerships with established esports and sports organizations, social media campaigns to build hype and attract players, and community engagement through outreach to local and international gaming communities. Both Slovenia and Colombia utilized social media as a primary tool for player recruitment, leveraging platforms like Instagram to engage their target audience.

Maximizing Exposure through Media

Promoting a GOTF Major is as crucial as organizing it, requiring digital marketing, influencer collaborations, and media outreach. “Promotion was a key focus from the beginning. We used digital marketing, influencer partnerships, and community engagement to generate excitement,” said Goran Kužet, Vice President of the Slovenian Esports Federation. “We adapted strategies in real time to enhance the experience with interactive content and behind-the-scenes coverage.” Meanwhile the WPC member in Colombia leveraged social media and influencer marketing. “Our promotion and live stream had great acceptance, with over 21K Instagram views.” said Diego Ramos, Director at Phygital Games Colombia.

Key Lessons for Future Success

A successful GOTF Major is built on a foundation of collaboration, innovation, and adaptability. By selecting the right venue, recruiting top talent, securing funding, and executing a strong promotional campaign, organizers can create an unforgettable experience for players and spectators. With the continued rise of phygital sports, the potential for growth is immense, offering new opportunities to push the boundaries of competitive gaming. By learning from past experiences and refining strategies, future tournaments will not only meet but exceed expectations, solidifying the GOTF Majors as premier events in the world of phygital competition.
