Phygital Basketball

Introducing
Phygital Basketball

Phygital Basketball is an exciting mix of virtual and real-life basketball. Players compete in both a digital game and a physical match, blending gaming skills with athletic ability. It’s a fresh take on basketball that challenges players in new ways and keeps fans on the edge of their seats. It’s a dynamic new sport for lovers of breathless gameplay.

Teams

Each team has 3-4 athletes – two active players and a substitute ready to step in. For support, each team can engage more people, such as coaches, team officials, etc. The number and composition of these are decided by the WPC organizer.

Format

Phygital Basketball games happen in two parts:
Digital Stage

Teams battle it out in a 2-on-2 virtual basketball game with the winner being the first team to reach 19 points (there is no requirement to win by at least two points.) If a team hits 20, that score is also recorded. Then there’s a short break.

Physical Stage

Teams hit the court for a 2-on-2 basketball match (substitutes can rotate in as long as the correct rules are followed). Each team starts this stage with the score that they achieved in the digital stage. The match ends either when one team scores 39 points, or the clock runs out after 7 minutes of play.

If after 7 minutes there’s a tie, a free-throw showdown is played. In the showdown, teams take turns shooting three free throws. If it’s still tied after three, everyone keeps going until one team scores one hoop more (with an equal number of throws). Also note that every player on a team must take a turn before another player can throw again.

Further guidelines

  • The digital stage takes place in a technical area with gaming consoles and monitors for participants.
  • The physical stage is played on a standard 3-on-3 basketball court.

Phygital Basketball offers something completely new by blending the digital and physical worlds. It’s fun, challenging, and filled with fast-paced action that keeps everyone on their toes. Whether you’re a gamer, an athlete, or just a fan of creative competition, you’ll love the energy and excitement this sport brings!
